Books

I haven't read many books about Mind Mapping. It is fairly straightforward, but some books I've found useful are listed here.

This book is highly recommended, it includes Mind Mapping but covers much more.

Software

There is other software available. As I find out more I'll add the sites here. Most of these sites have trial versions available for free download. I haven't tried all these programs and I'm not recommending one over the over. In the end it's just down to personal preference and cost. I have compared software marked with a (*) here. The mind maps on this site were nearly all produced with ConceptDraw MindMap and MindManager.

ConceptDraw MindMap (*) produces great looking mind maps. It has lots of drawing tools included in it, and there are versions for Mac and PC.

MindManager UK. (*) For various versions of MindManager. Make sure you ask for an education discount if you buy it. There is a free viewer available from this site that can be used to view the maps available from download from this page. MindManager only works on a PC. There is also a version for the Pocket PC which I haven't been able to try because I don't have one. Previous versions worked on Palm OS and when I tried that, I felt it was nice but it seemed expensive. I'm also unsure about how useful mind mapping on a tiny little screen actually is.

Inspiration. (*) An excellent program for students to use. Can be used in a similar way to MindManager too. It's geared more towards educational use than MindManager. There are versions for Mac and PC, as well as a Palm OS version (which is actually rather good).

MindMapper. Again there are various versions available including a Junior version which looks good. There are versions for PC and Palm OS.

MindGenius (*) is a British program that links well with Microsoft Office and has lots of templates to promote creative thinking. There are educational versions too.

Visual Mind (*) This program has a small set of icons and fairly basic formatting. It's good for Internet work as it's easy to make links to web pages and e-mail addresses. Also, you can make interactive maps for the Internet. Viewers needn't have a copy of the program. You can see an example of this by clicking here. PC only.

VisiMap (Umm... if this had been further up the list I would have been able to write more.) PC only.

SoftNeuron is more basic than most but it's only £7!!! Definitely worth a look. PC only.

FreeMind (*) goes one better than SoftNeuron in that it's free (but it is a lot more basic). It runs in your browser as a Java applet. I haven't been entirely successful in using it but I think that's more a problem with my system than with the program. There are versions for Mac, PC and Linux.

MyMind (*) is free and available for the Mac. It's not very flash but it works and it's free.
